Lights by Linea in partnership with Heideveld Cycling Club – Empowering Youth Through Sport and Community

About Us

Founded in 2021, Heideveld Cycling Club is based at 22 Katberg Road, Heideveld, Athlone. The club was established by Reginald De Lilie, a passionate sports enthusiast dedicated to making a positive impact in his community. Recognizing the need to support vulnerable youth, Reginald opened both his home and heart, providing young individuals with a safe and constructive environment.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he initiated indoor cycling training for local children to keep them engaged and active. Recognizing potential in five young riders, he began training them in April 2021 for the Cape Town Cycling Tour, which took place in October of that year. Remarkably, all five successfully completed the tour in under five hours with only five months of preparation.

Our Growth and Activities

Since its inception, the club has expanded to 25 members. Due to limited resources, funding, and space, membership intake is currently restricted. Our programs include:

  • Weekly cycling training sessions
  • Weekend outrides and weekday indoor training after school
  • Road racing and mentorship
  • Life skills development
  • Outdoor activities such as hiking, beach clean-ups, and trail runs
  • A safe space where young individuals from all backgrounds can feel welcomed and supported

The club was officially registered with the CIPC on November 2, 2021, with the goal of forming a structured social group. Beyond cycling, we teach:

  • Basic bicycle repairs and maintenance
  • Fundamental life skills, including cooking, baking, cleaning, and personal hygiene

Our members range from ages 12 to 41, and we provide meals after training sessions to ensure proper nutrition. Transportation is also provided for events, although limited by available space.

Why we do what we do

The primary mission of Heideveld Cycling Club is to keep young individuals engaged in positive activities, fostering lifelong friendships and ensuring they remain on a constructive path. Our programs are designed to:

  • Promote discipline and perseverance
  • Build confidence and leadership skills
  • Create opportunities for youth to experience new environments beyond Heideveld
  • Offer a safe alternative to negative influences such as drugs and crime

Achievements

  • 2021: Five riders, alongside Reginald, successfully completed the Cape Town Cycling Tour in under five hours, marking a significant milestone.
  • 2022: Despite challenges, including injuries and adverse weather, four out of six riders completed the Cape Town Cycling Tour with commendable times. One young rider even completed the race independently after the coach had to retire mid-event.
  • 2023: A record-breaking year with 15 riders participating in the Cape Town Cycling Tour. Eight riders completed the 109km race, and seven completed the 42km race. This was a proud achievement, as 10 riders were first-time participants.
  • Other races: Tour De PPA, PPA One Tonner, Nantis Race, Belhar Cancer Race, Museum of Childhood Fun Walk

2024 and Beyond Our riders have already participated in the Cape Town Cycling Tour, PPA One Tonner, and the Nantis Race, and have volunteered at the Cape Town Marathon and Museum of Childhood Fun Walk. Upcoming events include:

  • Belhar Cancer Race 2024
  • Cape Town Cycling Tour 2025
  • Winelands Race
  • Tour De PPA
  • 99er Race

Support Needed Currently, the club has 25 members but only 12 road bikes available for training and events. To ensure every rider has equal opportunities, we aim to provide each member with their own bike. Additional needs include:

  • Cycling rain jackets
  • Indoor trainers
  • Tracksuits or jackets
  • A bicycle trailer and a van/taxi for transporting equipment and bikes to events

How You Can Help The club is entirely funded and supported by Ingrid and Reginald De Lilie. Many of our members come from single-parent households or live with guardians who cannot contribute financially. Donations—whether monetary, equipment, or logistical support—are greatly appreciated and will help us continue making a difference in young lives.

Our Commitment Our members are eager learners, embracing challenges with enthusiasm. We continuously update our programs to maintain engagement and provide exposure to new experiences. More importantly, we strive to offer a safe and supportive environment where our members can grow into responsible, confident individuals.

We are proud of our achievements since 2021 and remain committed to empowering youth through sport and mentorship. By supporting Heideveld Cycling Club, you contribute to shaping brighter futures and fostering a strong, united community.
